We yearn to experience the idealized love depicted in so many novels, movies, poems, and popular songs. Ironically, it is the idealization of love that arms it with its destructive power. Popular media consistently remind us that love is all we need, but statistics concerning the rate of depression and suicides after divorce or romantic break up remind us what might happened if "all that we need" is taken away. This book is about our ideals of love, our experiences, of love, the actual disparity between the two, and the manners of coping with this disparity. A major study case of the book concerns men who have murdered their wives or partners allegedly 'out of love'. It is estimated that over 30% of all female murder victims in the United States die at the hands of a former or present spouse or boyfriend. How can murdering a loved one be associated with the assumed moral and altruistic love? Not only is love intrinsically ambivalent, but it can also give rise to dangerous consequences. We will address the historical development of the most relevant electronic instruments and explain each one without detailing their operation since many no longer operate today. In this sense, it is necessary to mention that it is not that the electronic instruments not developed in this volume do not matter, but that the importance of those addressed is much greater. Therefore, we will focus on the analysis of how they were manufactured and, where appropriate, how they evolved to become modern electronic music instruments. Since the design of new musical instruments has been complex, the instruments mentioned throughout this volume will not be explained primarily in technical detail. Still, the most relevant points will be mentioned as an introduction. Something that we must consider all the time when reading this volume is that all the instruments discussed have a common factor: their design has always been intrinsically linked to the technologies available to their inventor, depending on the time in which he lived. While many of them may seem somewhat outdated or childish when compared to those that exist today, we must never forget that most of these instruments ignored practices, aesthetic ideals, and industry standards about the time and place in which they were conceived, such as the ease of manufacture (the telharmonium is an incredible example), the sonic predictability and the economy of scale to be able to mass-manufacture them. For practical reasons, I have divided this volume into three sections: those developed in the 18th century, those produced in the 19th century, and finally, those manufactured in the 20th century, many of which are still in operation today. In this way, we will realize how most of the electronic instruments that are currently used are not more than a century old after they were manufactured for the first time, which is quite surprising. On the other hand, although a highly considerable number of patents for electronic instruments have been registered (especially in the 20th century), I have limited myself to mentioning the most relevant of them to have a notion of how it is that we got to the current point in this ambit. With this in mind, we will inevitably ask ourselves: Why have only very few of the electronic instruments discussed in this volume survived to date? Part of the answer to this question lies in the fact that those instruments that made it have had the capacity to adjust to the rapid and aggressive change of modernity, and because they have been conceived with too much intuition in mind; that is, they work perfectly or rarely fail, they generate familiarity in the consumer at the first contact, and their way of producing them has proven to be profitable for the investors behind the project or the company that manufactures them.
This book presents the serial killer as having 'imagopathy' - that is, a disorder of the imagination - manifested through such deficiencies as failure of empathy, rigid fantasies, and unresolved projections. The author argues that this disorder is a form of failed alchemy. His study challenges long-held assumptions that the Jungian concept of individuation is a purely healthful drive. Serial killers are unable to form insight after projecting untenable material onto their victims. Criminal profilers must therefore effect that insight informed by their own reactions to violent crime scene imagery, using what the author asserts is a form of Jung's 'active imagination'. This book posits sexual homicides as irrational shadow images in our rationalistic modern culture. Consequently, profilers bridge conscious and unconscious for the inexorably splintered killer as well as the culture at large.
Through examination of the death penalty in literature, Aaron Aquilina contests Heidegger's concept of 'being-towards-death' and proposes a new understanding of the political and philosophical subject. Dickens, Nabokov, Hugo, Sophocles and many others explore capital punishment in their works, from Antigone to Invitation to a Beheading. Using these varied case studies, Aquilina demonstrates how they all highlight two aspects of the experience. First, they uncover a particular state of being, or more precisely non-being, that comes with a death sentence, and, second, they reveal how this state exists beyond death row, as sovereignty and alterity are by no means confined to a prison cell. In contrast to Heidegger's being-towards-death, which individualizes the subject – only I can die my own death, supposedly – this book argues that, when condemned to death, the self and death collide, putting under erasure the category of subjectivity itself. Be it death row or not, when the supposed futurity of death is brought into the here and now, we encounter what Aquilina calls 'relational death'. Living on with death severs the subject's relation to itself, the other and political sociality as a whole, rendering the human less a named and recognizable 'being' than an anonymous 'living corpse', a human thing. In a sustained engagement with Blanchot, Levinas, Hegel, Agamben and Derrida, The Ontology of Death articulates a new theory of the subject, beyond political subjectivity defined by sovereignty and beyond the Heideggerian notion of ontological selfhood.
