From Gangs to Grace and Grace Unfolded are an inspirational testimony of God's grace in seemingly impossible circumstances. Eddie Banales began as a young gangbanger, running wild through the streets of Pomona, California, during a time when violence and death were the norm. Chaos followed as the streets changed him from a street wise youth to a kill-or-be-killed minded gangster. Meanwhile, the demands of family and academics hounded Eddie to succeed at all costs. Small successes like getting elected president of the student body, hustling while evading jail time and staying alive while so many others were being sent to early graves, convinced him that he could not succumb to the destiny of so many others. That is, until a harrowing encounter with the supernatural altered the course of his life. After a miraculous conversion, he began a lifelong journey to be a Godly father, husband and friend. His experiences in the streets and behind the pulpit culminate in the founding of Gangs to Grace ministries and the transformation of a hardened heart to a heart after God.
It was a warm spring evening in the country home where Beth and Marie shared their lives with dogs, cats, cows, chickens, and many beautiful birds flittering in the trees. Beth sat under a huge oak tree and relaxed after chores were done, animals fed, and the evening light fading. Marie had left that morning with her brother to visit family up north. Beth was planning to catch up at home, with HAM radio operators, spend some quality time fishing in the nearby river, and write a few stories to share with friends. She wrapped up the evening with some work on a jigsaw puzzle and placed her fishing tackle near the back door. The pets followed her to the bedroom and settled for the night. Beth fell asleep with nostalgic dreams of favorite things. There was a loud screaming from the HAM radio down the hall around four in the morning. "Mayday, Mayday!" Beth sprang out of bed and stumbled down the dimly lit hallway. It was her friend Vet Gary on the radio, and his message was frantic. He shared news of catastrophe and widespread panic but no information of what the cause was, but something destructive was happening. His message was clear. "Get somewhere safe now!" Beth grabbed a few necessities and her pets and headed to the safest nearby space she knew--the storm cellar. She thought of Marie traveling and prayed they too would be safe. A new journey was beginning, and there could be no preparation for unpredictable destruction. Many lives were to be forever uprooted.
One morning, Beth awakened from a deep sleep and sat straight up in bed. She had been having the same repeated dream, again! Looking at the bedside clock, she saw that the power was out, again! She lay back down and sighed deeply. What was once considered “normal” was gone and never to return. That wall had been built right under everyone’s noses, and it now divided the country in half. What were considered their normal resources were scarce on this side but known to be abundant in the East, because that is where manufacturing, industry, health care, universities, the scientific communities, and everything else had been moved. What are we going to do? she thought. Then she remembered the dream that kept repeating in her sleep. It seemed to hold a message for her. The dream was that she was walking down a rutted dirt road surrounded by trees and bushes, with the birds singing. She did not know where she was going in her dream. Today, she thought, there is a road we must walk down and a journey we must begin if we want a new “normal.” Where does Beth need to start?
