This book contains the proceedings of the "First International Symposium on Insect Pheromones," which was held at Wageningen, The Netherlands, from March 6 to March 11, 1994. Eighty participants from 17 countries attended the symposium, which turned out to be a unique forum for the exchange of the latest worldwide findings on insect pheromones, an opportunity to discuss and debate unsettled issues, and a mechanism to define new directions in pheromone research and foster interdisciplinary collaborations. The meeting comprised five sessions representing the breadth of disciplinary interest in pheromones, a typical charac teristic of this research area. In the sessions the following topics were presented: (1) control of pheromone production (organized by W. L. Roelofs), (2) sensory processing of pheromone signals (T. L. Payne), (3) neuroethology of pheromone mediated responses (T. C. Baker), (4) use of pheromones in direct control (A. K. Minks and R. T. Card6), and (5) evolution of pheromone communication (c. LOfstedt). All sessions started with a series of 30-minute lectures, after which ample time was reserved for discussion. In each session some participants were asked to serve as discussants and to initiate and stimulate discussion, and a rapporteur was recruited to make notes of these discussions and to summarize the general trends emerging from the session. The general program ming of the symposium was in the hands of R. T. Carde, A. K. Minks, and T. L. Payne.

In all, 1550 species of whiteflies have been identified. The rapid spread of Bemisia tabaci has occurred throughout the globe and it is regarded as the most notorious species. It is a complex species known to contain many biotypes namely, New World (Biotype -A), B-biotype MEAM1 (Biotype-B or Bemisia argentifolii, and MED (Biotype-Q) depending upon the geographical location. The complete information on the bio-ecology of important species along with the feeding mechanism has been presented in this book. The use of modern techniques of identification has added more biotypes considering the variations in host range, species of endosymbionts, virus transmission efficiency, and resistance to pesticides. The resistance and resurgence due to pesticides has been discussed in the monograph. The information on economic thresholds for judicious use of pesticides or release of natural enemies against whiteflies has been quoted in this compilation The pest control methods, namely chemical, cultural measures, biocontrol agents, resistant varieties, and mechanical devices have been elaborated on. Based on the availability of information the integrated model has been suggested to contain the whitefly menace under different situations. Considering the key factors responsible for the outbreak of whiteflies, a sound system of IPM has been formulated. The book also contains the use of semiochemicals and biotechnological tools likely to gain momentum in the future.

Northern Cheyenne Dog Soldier Standing Cloud fights against the white man’s expansion into his people’s homeland. Well bred young Army wife Anah Hoffman Moore is fascinated by a language and culture far different from her own. How they meet and fall in love is set in a troubling time in the western territories of America, when Manifest Destiny rapidly encroached upon the culture of the native inhabitants. Anah turns to laudanum in the wake of a violent attack on herself, and the deaths of her husband and their young child, and is subsequently led, by an old army scout who has befrended her, to the winter camp of a small band of Cheyenne, where she finds solace for a season. She leaves there and becomes a translator for Red River War prisoners being taken to Ft. Marion on Florida’s Northern Atlantic coast. It is there Standing Cloud first becomes aquainted with Anah, whom he and his fellow prisoners call “the Sweet Grass Woman” for her story-telling abilities. While on a supervised outing of prisoners they become caught up in a hurricane, and find themselves cast up on a Sea Isle off the coast of Georgia, where they are sheltered by a community of emancipated slaves. Apart from their respective cultures they begin a romantic idyll. Their bond strengthens, but as the summer turns to autumn Cloud becomes restive, haunted by his brothers still imprisoned, so they return to the fort. Back at Ft. Marion they continue a relationship, of necessity clandestine. When the notice comes for the men’s release, remanding them to their respective reservations, Cloud chooses a different path. Anah finds that he has left in the night with only a note and a promise that he will return for her. She expects his imminent return, but a few months pass with no word. An unexpected discovery changes Anah’s life, and she eventually heads West, determined to start her own Indian School, one that respects and embraces their native customs. Despite success, she yearns for Standing Cloud’s return. My Heart Grows Wide Within Me, set in the 1870’s, tells of shattered lives on the western frontier during the Indian Wars. The historical novel contains visions, dreams, stories, legends, vignettes, journal entries and well-known figures from the era, achieving emotional truths that transcend place and time.

The computer revolution both in the hardware as well as in software has made it possible for economists to analyze complex issues which could not be solved in the past by analytical methods. A large library of numerical techniques are now available to economists for solving models ranging from a simple system of linear simultaneous equations to large non-linear dynamic optimization models. We attempt to take advantage of these advancements in computational economics to address the issue of global warming and economic development. The use of computer simulation models has enhanced the understanding of some of the underlying issues in the global warming literature which would have been impossible without these models. However, to date, the global warming issue has been addressed in a partial equilibrium framework. In other words, the climate scientists tend to specify economic variables as exogenous variables in their global warming models while the economists do the same by specifying the climate variables as exogenous variables in their global warming models. Both approaches ignore important feedback relationships which will be triggered when either economic or climate variables are perturbed. The ideal model structure would be one in which both systems are incorporated within one framework with emphasis on the long run effects of greenhouse gas curbing policies and the corresponding effect on the economic growth potential of the economies.

This book focuses on Least Squares Support Vector Machines (LS-SVMs) which are reformulations to standard SVMs. LS-SVMs are closely related to regularization networks and Gaussian processes but additionally emphasize and exploit primal-dual interpretations from optimization theory. The authors explain the natural links between LS-SVM classifiers and kernel Fisher discriminant analysis. Bayesian inference of LS-SVM models is discussed, together with methods for imposing spareness and employing robust statistics. The framework is further extended towards unsupervised learning by considering PCA analysis and its kernel version as a one-class modelling problem. This leads to new primal-dual support vector machine formulations for kernel PCA and kernel CCA analysis. Furthermore, LS-SVM formulations are given for recurrent networks and control. In general, support vector machines may pose heavy computational challenges for large data sets. For this purpose, a method of fixed size LS-SVM is proposed where the estimation is done in the primal space in relation to a Nystrom sampling with active selection of support vectors. The methods are illustrated with several examples.
