Indian sub-continental writers of English fiction have always been confronted with onerous choices. Inheritors of literary tradition riddled with regional and linguistic finitude, the mere choice of a proper name hopelessly parochialize their stories. Many critics wonder why such writers did not write in their regional languages , the answer to which is that that would invite self-exile from the common market of world literature. Translations, even the best of them, remain surrogate.It is, therefore, all the more satisfying that during the recent decades, writers born on the subcontinent like Salman Rushdie, Hanif Kureishi, Vikram Seth,Amitav Ghosh and others have leaped into mainstream English fiction and elicited critical acclaim. Indian writers in English, despite being largely confined to a small, typical Indian backwater ~perhaps because of it ~ have attracted a good deal of attention here and abroad. They have brought to Indian literature a style and feel, a conviction and maturity all its own. We have started feeling like heading for a modern reconstituted Indian sensibility. But , after a long gap of Rabindranath Tagore’s success, we may ask ourselves as to why Indians cannot write great literature. Perhaps, Matthew Arnold’s phrase “ lack of epochal significance ” applies to the literary works emerging from our soil. Can we claim honestly that we have produced a single author who could match the great masters of Western literature? A Flaubert? A Faulkner? Joyce? A Tolstoy?

This books documents the salient characters of the tectonic evolution of the Indian subcontinent. It showcases the well investigated subcontinent of Gondwana. The book is linked to an updated geological and tectonic map of this region on 1:12,000,000 in scale. The Indian subcontinent displays almost uninterrupted and unique the geological history since about Eo-Archean (~3800 Ma) to recent, with the development of many Proterozoic deformed and metamorphosed fold belts around Archean nuclei, and enormously thick undeformed platform deposits. After their stabilization during late Proterozoic, the subcontinent underwent Paleozoic rifting and deposition of coal-bearing thick sequences, followed by enormously-thick outpouring of Deccan volcanics as a consequence of huge mantle plume. The youngest event in its evolution is the Cenozoic Himalayan Orogenic Mountains, spanning the area between Nanga Parbat and Namcha Barwah; a part of which extends both in Pakistan and Myanmar.

Correct and valid names have been adopted for the floral and faunal elements along with local and English names. The keys have been provided for plant species from infra-specific to family level for easy identification. Besides statistical analysis of floral composition, the phytogeographical and biological spectra have also been worked out to determine the routes of migration and phytoclimate respectively. The faunal diversity includes vertebrate fauna only, arranged in a classified manner. About 107 colour photographs of habitat and plants and animals with 36 illustrations of plant species have been provided. In all, 1550 species of whiteflies have been identified. The rapid spread of Bemisia tabaci has occurred throughout the globe and it is regarded as the most notorious species. It is a complex species known to contain many biotypes namely, New World (Biotype -A), B-biotype MEAM1 (Biotype-B or Bemisia argentifolii, and MED (Biotype-Q) depending upon the geographical location. The complete information on the bio-ecology of important species along with the feeding mechanism has been presented in this book. The use of modern techniques of identification has added more biotypes considering the variations in host range, species of endosymbionts, virus transmission efficiency, and resistance to pesticides. The resistance and resurgence due to pesticides has been discussed in the monograph. The information on economic thresholds for judicious use of pesticides or release of natural enemies against whiteflies has been quoted in this compilation The pest control methods, namely chemical, cultural measures, biocontrol agents, resistant varieties, and mechanical devices have been elaborated on. Based on the availability of information the integrated model has been suggested to contain the whitefly menace under different situations. Considering the key factors responsible for the outbreak of whiteflies, a sound system of IPM has been formulated. The book also contains the use of semiochemicals and biotechnological tools likely to gain momentum in the future.

The present volume appears to be the first general introduction, for English-reading students, to that which, in Indian tradition, corresponds to 'philosophy' in British and probably in most other English-speaking universities. It shows how Indian philosophers have posed such questioins as whether we can be sure we 'know' anything, whether words 'mean' anything, whether it is possible to generalise from observed regularities in nature and whether there is anything in nature, or in 'reality', corresponding to our concept of a 'class'. It traces the sustained and rigorous analysis of such philosophical problems through many centuries, indicating in outline the interrelationships of ideas and 'schools' and development of the theory of knowledge, formal logic and other analytical investigations. The closely related development of science in India is also indicated. This does not imply that Indian philosophy is the same as 'Western' philosophy or part of it, which would make it redundant and uninteresting. It is interesting in that it discusses similar philosophical problems in different ways, as philosophers elsewhere have. But there is the problem of translation, obvious in most books on Indian tradition, especially if we compare any two of them. This Course is based only on original Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit sources translated by the author.

Bangladesh has the world s fastest growing off-grid solar home system coverage, yet only 10% of mainly rural households have so far benefited. A key policy issue is whether the partial subsidy provided under the current program should be continued and this study highlights how the social benefits far exceed the cost of the subsidy.
