This book is the culmination of many years of research by a scientist renowned for his work in this field. It contains a compilation of the data dealing with the known stratigraphic ranges of varied behaviors, chiefly animal with a few plant and fungal, and coevolved relations. A significant part of the data consists of ``frozen behavior'', i.e. those in which an organism has been preserved while actually ``doing'' something, as contrasted with the interpretations of behavior of an organism deduced from functional morphology, important as the latter may be. The conclusions drawn from this compilation suggest that both behaviors and coevolved relations appear infrequently, following which there is relative fixity of the relation, i.e., two rates of evolution, very rapid and essentially zero. This conclusion complies well with the author's prior conclusion that community evolution followed the same rate pattern. In fact, communities are regarded here, as in large part, expressions of both behavior and coevolved relations, rather than as random aggregates controlled almost wholly by varied, unrelated physical parameters tracked by organisms, i.e., the concept that communities have no biologic reality, being merely statistical abstractions. The book is illustrated throughout with more than 400 photographs and drawings. It will be of interest to ethologists, evolutionists, parasitologists, paleontologists, and palaeobiologists at research and post-graduate levels.

Implied external limits in this context are defined as those limits that override the exercise of a human right on public interest grounds or on grounds relating to competing human rights and that either fall outside the scope of a limitation/qualification clause of an international criminal court's internal legal instruments or go beyond its express and ordinary terms. The present monograph will point to various sources of legal uncertainty which international criminal courts have generated in the limitation process of those human rights relevant to international criminal proceedings and to the definition of international crimes. The monograph will examine the relation between human rights, limitations on human rights standards and proportionality under international criminal procedural law and international criminal law (understood substantively) in light of the limitation and proportionality practices of international human rights monitoring bodies.

How ever, the rest of the book (Vols. 1 and 2) has required only minor modification to clarify the presentation and to modify or replace individual problems to make them more effective. The answers to the problems are available in Solutions Manual jor Computational Techniques jor Fluid Dynamics by K. Srinivas and C. A. J. Fletcher, published by Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg, 1991. The computer programs have also been reviewed and tidied up. These are available on an IBM compatible floppy disc direct from the author. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many readers for their usually generous comments about the first edition and particularly those readers who went to the trouble of drawing specific errors to my attention. In this revised edi tion considerable effort has been made to remove a number of minor errors that had found their way into the original. The idea of a ‘leisure society’ was in its heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was predicted that the pattern of falling working hours which had been experienced in Western societies in the first half of the twentieth century would continue indefinitely. The leisure society has clearly not been realised. On the contrary: contemporary industrial societies seem to be characterised by a shortage of time, experienced as ‘time squeeze’ and stress. The leisure society idea can be seen as the modern version of the age-old dream of a ‘life of ease and plenty’. This analytically and empirically rich book traces the idea in history, through biblical, classical Greek, medieval and nineteenth century utopian writings and into twentieth century concerns with dystopia and the impact of rapid technological change. The ‘leisure society’ concept turns out to have been an elusive and short-lived phenomenon. For a variety of reasons, the trend towards shorter working hours ran out of steam in the last quarter of the twentieth century. However, while leisure scholars have deserted the topic, a diverse range of activists, including environmentalists, economists and feminists, continue to make the case for reducing working hours. Whatever Happened to the Leisure Society? concludes that the on-going ‘struggle for time’ should be supported, for the sake of human health and well-being and for the sake of the planet. This is a valuable resource for students and academics in the fields of leisure studies, cultural studies, history, economics, sociology and political science.

As indicated in Vol. 1, the purpose of this two-volume textbook is to pro vide students of engineering, science and applied mathematics with the spe cific techniques, and the framework to develop skill in using them, that have proven effective in the various branches of computational fluid dy namics Volume 1 describes both fundamental and general techniques that are relevant to all branches of fluid flow. This volume contains specific tech niques applicable to the different categories of engineering flow behaviour, many of which are also appropriate to convective heat transfer. The contents of Vol. 2 are suitable for specialised graduate courses in the engineering computational fluid dynamics (CFD) area and are also aimed at the established research worker or practitioner who has already gained some fundamental CFD background. It is assumed that the reader is famil iar with the contents of Vol. 1. The contents of Vol. 2 are arranged in the following way: Chapter 11 de velops and discusses the equations governing fluid flow and introduces the simpler flow categories for which specific computational techniques are considered in Chaps. 14-18. Most practical problems involve computational domain boundaries that do not conveniently coincide with coordinate lines. Consequently, in Chap. 12 the governing equations are expressed in generalised curvilinear coordinates for use in arbitrary computational domains. The corresponding problem of generating an interior grid is considered in Chap. 13.
