At this time when astronomers are being surprised by the discovery of objects which emit a fabulously large amount of energy, that is the quasi-stellar radio sources and the quasi-stellar galaxies, and when by the means of space vehicles X rays, gamma rays and cosmic rays are being observed to come from the depths of interstellar space, one may ask why write a book about stars. Stars seem to be almost incidental when one looks at the universe in terms of exceedingly great energies. Nevertheless, stars exist. They are accessible to study and they have not yet revealed all their secrets. This is enough to arouse interest and to cause one to try to find answers to the questions which arise. The early type stars are particularly interesting because they are spendthrift stars pouring out their energy at a great rate. But their brilliance is also their undoing. They must evolve rather quickly, on an astrophysical scale. Thus by studying these stars we are studying a population in change. The implications from the local and from the cosmological viewpoint are important if one wishes to understand the details of stellar evolution and of galactic structure. Perhaps one of the simplest reasons for writing a book about the early type stars is to see if some of the conundrums pre sented by the spectra of these stars can be unravelled when all the available infor mation is brought together.

Gas Chromatography: Principles, Techniques, and Applications, Second Edition, is a general textbook on gas chromatography suitable for users of the technique and for research workers. First published in 1989, this book contained the first systematic account of magnetoresistance in metals, the study of which has provided solid-state physicists with much valuable information about electron motion in metals. The electrical resistance of a metal is usually changed when a magnetic field is applied to it; at low temperatures the change may be very large indeed and when magnetic breakdown is involved, very complex. Every metal behaves differently, and the effect is highly dependent on the direction of the field relative to the crystal axes. Quite apart from its usefulness for determining the Ferni surfaces of individual metals, the phenomenon presents many interesting problems in its own right; it is the phenomenon, rather than its applications, that Professor Pippard concentrates on in this book. The level of treatment is aimed at readers with a basic knowledge of undergraduate solid-state physics, and makes no great demand on mathematical ability. The text is copiously illustrated with real experimental results.
Principles of Optics is one of the classic science books of the twentieth century, and probably the most influential book in optics published in the past 40 years. The book also includes a new chapter on scattering from inhomogeneous media which provides a comprehensive treatment of the theory of scattering of scalar as well as of electromagnetic waves, including the Born series and the Rytov series. The chapter also presents an account of the principles of diffraction tomography - a refinement of the CAT scan - to which Emil Wolf, one of the authors, has made a basic contribution by formulating in 1969 what is generally regarded to be the basic theorem in this field. The chapter also includes an account of scattering from periodic potentials and its connection to the classic subject of determining the structure of crystals from X-ray diffraction experiments, including accounts of von Laue equations, Bragg's law, the Ewald sphere of reflection and the Ewald limiting sphere, both generalized to continuous media. These topics, although originally introduced in connection with the theory of X-ray diffraction by crystals, have since become of considerable relevance to optics, for example in connection with deep holograms. Other new topics covered in this new edition include interference with broad-band light, which introduces the reader to an important phenomenon discovered relatively recently by Emil Wolf, namely the generation of shifts of spectral lines and other modifications of spectra of radiated fields due to the state of coherence of a source. There is also a section on the so-called Rayleigh-Sommerfield diffraction theory which, in recent times, has been finding increasing popularity among optical scientists. There are also several new appendices, including one on energy conservation in scalar wavefields, which is seldom discussed in books on optics. This monograph provides a systematic study of asymptotic models of continuum mechanics for composite structures, which are either dilute (for example, two-phase composite structures with small inclusions) or densely packed (in this case inclusions may be close to touching). It is based on the results of recent research and includes a comprehensive analysis of dipole and multipole fields associated with defects in solids. The text covers static problems of elasticity in dilute composites as well as spectral problems. Applications of the mathematical models included in the book are in damage mechanics and in problems of design of composite structures that can be used as filters or polarisers of elastic waves.Dipole tensors are defined in Chapter 1 both for scalar boundary value problems for the Laplacian and for vector problems of elasticity. In Chapter 2 the dipole tensors are used in spectral problems involving domains with small defects. Chapter 3 introduces a multipole method for static problems (both electrostatics and elasticity) in composite structures containing doubly periodic arrays of circular inclusions. Chapter 4 presents a multipole method for eigenvalue problems of electromagnetism and elasticity.
The monograph is devoted to the study of initial-boundary-value problems for multi-dimensional Sobolev-type equations over bounded domains. The authors consider both specific initial-boundary-value problems and abstract Cauchy problems for first-order (in the time variable) differential equations with nonlinear operator coefficients with respect to spatial variables. The main aim of the monograph is to obtain sufficient conditions for global (in time) solvability, to obtain sufficient conditions for blow-up of solutions at finite time, and to derive upper and lower estimates for the blow-up time. The abstract results apply to a large variety of problems. Thus, the well-known Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation and Rosenau-Burgers equations with sources and many other physical problems are considered as examples. Moreover, the method proposed for studying blow-up phenomena for nonlinear Sobolev-type equations is applied to equations which play an important role in physics. For instance, several examples describe different electrical breakdown mechanisms in crystal semiconductors, as well as the breakdown in the presence of sources of free charges in a self-consistent electric field. The monograph contains a vast list of references (440 items) and gives an overall view of the contemporary state-of-the-art of the mathematical modeling of various important problems arising in physics. Since the list of references contains many papers which have been published previously only in Russian research journals, it may also serve as a guide to the Russian literature.

North Korea and the United States have been officially at war for over 70 years, one of the longest lasting and most unbalanced conflicts in world history, in which a small East Asian state has held its own against a Western superpower for over three generations. Through their actions, the lives of all the main characters become intertwined. Each character is unique in terms of who and what they stand for. Some are Black others White. The characters in Dinah Blu, while works of the author's imagination strive to be true to life. In creating the characters, I have gone beyond mere ""stereo-typing"" inorder for the characters to appear quiet real on the page. The plot is built upon the experiences of the characters and it is the actions of the characters which define the work. And there is a specific time frame when all these actions occur. In keeping with my intent to deal with the themes which define a well written novel, the characters experience many things over the course of time. To describe each and every action which takes place in the novel would be too difficult. However, in keeping with the novel's intent, race, religion, war, justice, love, hate, wealth, poverty, suffering, joy, pain, happiness, hope, and despair are all explored through the various characters.

The Advanced Study Institute on 'Elementary Excitations in Solids, Molecules, and Atoms' was held at the University of Antwerp (U.I.A.) from June 18th till June 30th 1973. The In stitute was sponsored by NATO. Co-sponsors were: Agfa-Gevaert N.V. (Mortsel-Belgium), Bell Telephone Mfg. Co. (Antwerp-Belgium), I.B.M. BelgiumN. V. (Brussels-Belgium), the National Science Founda tion (Washington D.C. - U.S .A.) and the Uni versi ty of Antwerp (U.I .A.) . A total of 120 lecturers and participants attended the Institute. Over the last few years, substantial progress has been made in the description of the elementary excitations of the elec tronic and vibrational systems and their interactions. Parallel with this, the experimentalists have obtained outstanding re sults, partly as a result of availability of coherent light sour ces from the far infrared through the visible region, and partly because of the availability of synchrotron radiation sources in the soft X-ray region. The results of today will lead to fur ther progress over the next years. It was the purpose of this NATO Advanced Study Institute to present a state of the art, namely a survey of experiment and theory.
This preface is addressed to the reader who wishes to inquire into the prevailing concepts, hypotheses and theories about development of sensory systems and wants to know how they are exemplified in the following chapters. I believe that science is hypothesis and theory and that the growth and evolution of any branch of science can be measured by the degree to which its theories have been reified. By that standard, one must conc1ude that developmental neuro biologie is in its infancy. The rapid accumulation of observations which has occurred in this branch of science in the past century leads to progress only to the extent that the facts validate or falsify hypotheses. The following chapters show that we have a plethora of facts but a dearth of hypotheses. Another index of the maturity of any branch of science is its level of historical self-awareness. Because the history of any branch of science is essentially the history of ideas and of the rise and fall of theories, the level of historical awareness is related to the extent to which reification of its hypothetical constructs has advanced. It is largely because few theories of development of sensory systems, or indeed, of developmental neurobiology, have progressed far in the process of reification that the his tory of developmental neurobiology remains unwritten. The subject of this volume is hardly mentioned in the many books devoted to the history of related disciplines.
