Of interest, therefore, are selected aspects of nuclear physics, electromagnetics, plasma physics, reaction dynamics, materials science, and engineering systems, all brought together to form an integrated perspective on nuclear fusion and its practical utilization.The book identifies several distinct themes. The first is concerned with preliminary and introductory topics which relate to the basic and relevant physical processes associated with nuclear fusion. Then, the authors undertake an analysis of magnetically confined, inertially confined, and low-temperature fusion energy concepts. Subsequently, they introduce the important blanket domains surrounding the fusion core and discuss synergetic fusion-fission systems. Finally, they consider selected conceptual and technological subjects germane to the continuing development of fusion energy systems.

This book is intended as an introductory exposition of those nuclear energy systems concepts which are characterized by an integrated utiliz ation of complementary nuclear processes. Basic to such systems is the notion of synergism, which herein implies the cooperative interaction of selected nuclear reactions and system components so as to provide overall advantages not possible otherwise. While the concept of nuclear energy synergism has in recent years become the focus of an increasing number of conferences, scientific papers, and institutional in-house reports, no text which encompasses the major topics of the subject at a conceptual and analytical level has appeared. It is our aim to present a systematic characterization of these emerging nuclear energy concepts suitable for the senior university student of nuclear science and engineering as well for the active pro fessional involved in nuclear energy systems planning and analysis. In addressing the subject of nuclear energy synergism we have become most conscious of the tension between realism and vision in nuclear energy technology. As developed here, our perception of nuclear energy synergism is firmly rooted in the present and then seeks to proceed toward a heightened degree of compatibility and efficacy based on an enhanced integration of relevant nuclear processes. It is our view that such conceptual considerations must assume a greater role in the emerging techological orientation of nuclear energy systems planning.

A former slave, Whitman worked as a laborer before finding employment as a financial agent and fundraiser for Wilberforce University, the first historically black college owned and operated by African Americans. In these poems, Whitman depicts the story of the nation on an epic scale, weaving history and personal experience into a compelling narrative of hope, promise, and betrayal. Intended to promote the mission of Wilberforce, Not a Man, and Yet a Man has been praised for its scope and Romantic style since its publication. “My pen appeals to right and common sense. / The black man has a cause, deny who dares, / And him to vindicate my muse prepares.” Freed from slavery during the Civil War, A.A. Whitman worked and obtained an education in the early days of Reconstruction, a period of immense progress that nevertheless proved the dire need to change the hearts and minds of white Americans. Although they had been freed by law, many African Americans, whether born free or formerly enslaved, suffered violence and prejudice as they attempted to enter the workforce, build their families, and establish themselves as property owners around the country. Not a Man, and Yet a Man is a brilliant debut from a pioneering voice in nineteenth century American poetry. The dynamics of quantum systems exposed to ultrafast (at the femtosecond time-scale) and strong laser radiation has a highly non-linear character, leading to a number of new phenomena, outside the reach of traditional spectroscopy. The current laser technology makes feasible the probing and control of quantum-scale systems with fields that are as strong as the interatomic Coulombic interactions and time resolution that is equal to (or less than) typical atomic evolution times. It is indispensable that any theoretical description of the induced physical processes should rely on the accurate calculation of the atomic structure and a realistic model of the laser radiation as pulsed fields. This book aims to provide an elementary introduction of theoretical and computational methods and by no means is anywhere near to complete. The selection of the topics as well as the particular viewpoint is best suited for early-stage students and researchers; the included material belongs in the mainstream of theoretical approaches albeit using simpler language without sacrificing mathematical accuracy. A. A. Long presents fourteen essays on the themes of selfhood and rationality in ancient Greek philosophy. The discussion ranges over seven centuries of innovative thought, starting with Heraclitus' injunction to listen to the cosmic logos, and concluding with Plotinus' criticism of those who make embodiment essential to human identity. For the Greek philosophers the notion of a rational self was bound up with questions about divinity and happiness called eudaimonia, meaning a god-favoured life or a life of likeness to the divine. While these questions are remote from current thought, Long also situates the book's themes in modern discussions of the self and the self's normative relation to other people and the world at large. Ideas and behaviour attributed to Socrates and developed by Plato are at the book's centre. They are preceded by essays that explore general facets of the soul's rationality. Later chapters bring in salient contributions made by Aristotle and Stoic philosophers. All but one of these pieces has been previously published in periodicals or conference volumes, but the author has revised and updated everything. The book is written in a style that makes it accessible to many kinds of reader, not only professors and graduate students but also anyone interested in the history of our identity as rational animals.

There is a growing appreciation of traditional medical systems as a source of considerable knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants. Traditional medicines have the potential to offer leads to identifying potentially valuable chemicals that can be developed into new and more effective drugs, including safer contraceptives. The Pacific region is an excellent arena in which to search for such chemicals as: the area contains plant species not found elsewhere; there is every indication that many of the plants used more generally in traditional Pacific medicine may be efficacious – of 74 plants surveyed in one study 86% showed pharmacological activity; and in many Pacific traditions, knowledge of medicinal use is transmitted between generations as part of an inherited body of ethnomedical knowledge. This book documents all the available information on plants that have been used traditionally for anti-fertility and fertility purposes in the Pacific region, and indicates which of these plants hold the most promise for providing new anti-fertility agents. It also records instances in which the plant has been used outside the region.

The ninth edition of the Italian Conference on Computational Linguistics (CLiC-it 2023) was held from 30th November to 2nd December 2023 at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, in the beautiful venue of the Auditorium Santa Margherita - Emanuele Severino. After the edition of 2020, which was organized in fully virtual mode due to the health emergency related to Covid-19, and CLiC-it 2021, which was held in hybrid mode, with CLiC-it 2023 we are back to a fully in-presence conference. Overall, almost 210 participants registered to the conference, confirming that the community is eager to meet in person and to enjoy both the scientific and social events together with the colleagues.
