The volume The Italian Method of la drammatica: its Legacy and Reception includes the long and complex investigation to identify the Italian acting-code system of the drammatica used by nineteenth-century Italian actors such as Adelaide Ristori, Giovanni Grasso, Tommaso Salvini, Eleonora Duse. In particular, their acting inspired Stanislavsky who reformedtwentieth-century stage. The declamatory code of the drammatica was composed by symbols for notation of voice and gesture which Italian actors marked in their prompt-books.The discovery of the drammatica’s code sheds new light on nineteenth-century acting. Having deciphered the phonetic symbols of the code, Anna Sica has given birth an investigation with a group of outstanding scholars in an attempt to explore the drammatica’s legacy, and its reception in Europe as well as in Asia. At this stage new evidence has emerged proving that, for instance, the symbol used by the drammatica actors to sign the colorito vocale was known to English actors in the second half of the nineteenth century.By noting how Adelaide Ristori passed on her art to Irving’s actress Genevieve Ward, and how Stanislavsky, almost aflame, moulded his system from Duse’s acting, an unexplored variety in the reception of the drammatica’s legacy is revealed.

Italian Design The Milan Triennale is an Italian State institution which, together with the Municipality of Milan and the Lombardy Region, is charged with preserving and promoting Italian Design as well as carrying out research in framework programs focusing on town-planning, architecture, handicrafts, industrial production, fashion, new media, etc. In its long history, the Milan Triennale has always followed developments in the field of applied arts; from the thirties to the post-war years, during the reconstruction years and the country's economic miracle and later during the economic and energy crisis of the seventies. Since the eighties, Milan has increasingly become an international centre of design. The Triennale played a leading role in organizing important qualitative events that have enhanced the city's image. Last but not least, the foundation of the Museum of Design. To achieve its goals, the Milan Triennale has established its own Research Centre and a Permanent Collection of Italian Design. The 100 objects of Italian Design on show in this exhibition have been selected from the Permanent Collection, a unique qualitative and quantative ensemble of Italy's design legacy. The Permanent Collection is used as a basis for all exhibits on Italian Design at the Triennale or around the world: its intention is to shed new light on the history of industrial production in Italy. The pieces in the Collection illustrate the heterogeneous history of Italian design, the innovation and experimentation that have made it famous and immediately recognisable thanks to the works created by its master designers. Italy is a country with a thriving manufacturing industry that focuses on quality design and products: in fact, design represents one of the country's strategic economic resources. Its "good fortune," and niche position on the international stage and world markets is primarily due to the "system" that has gradually been developed. The system unites design culture and production which are influenced, on the one hand, by the still unrivalled works of the past - for example, those by Leonardo da Vinci - and, on the other, by the vision of a future that goes beyond mere technique and the exploitation of natural resources. The exhibition 100 Objects of Italian Design, organised by the curator of the Collection, Silvana Annicchiarico, uses the objects that have made Italian design famous all over the world to tell this story. The exhibition is a way to discover the history of a country which, thanks to its creativity and design, is once again a leader on the world stage; a role it intends to pursue and develop by welcoming all and every contribution. The book is a reflection on childhood, dealing especially with children's wellbeing and the implementation of their rights. Starting from the recognition – first expressed in the 1924 Declaration of the Rights of the Child and reaffirmed in the 2000 Treaty of Nice as well as in more recent initiatives of the European Union – that children must be granted the right to be considered as persons and afforded the best possible living conditions, the book's aim is to create a dialog among scholars with different backgrounds. For this reason, it draws on a range of different vocabularies, conceptual apparatuses and methodologies, as we are convinced that it is reductive to confine research and theory within specific disciplinary bounds. This is particularly true of a topic as complex as that of childhood today, especially in the light of the changes within the family that have taken place or are still in the making. Accordingly, the key terms in the text are agency and autonomy, participation and well-being. But what does each of them actually mean? How do they can be analysed and measured? What initiatives can be taken? The ontological overturning of the status of childhood that has emerged in recent years, whereby children are now considered as social actors and subjects in their own right, urges us to keep the focus on the contexts in the light of the unexpected consequences of applying the fundamental principles of the new sociology of childhood. The book is addressed not only to a small audience of specialists, but also to students, practitioners and those who are curious about the topic, providing them with fresh insights and information.

Sin dalla loro nascita, le Esposizioni Universali sono state lo specchio della visione di progresso del sistema economico mondiale. In origine, tale obiettivo veniva esplicitato attraverso rappresentazioni tese a celebrare la capacità dell'ingegno umano nel superare ogni vincolo che la natura gli poneva di fronte. L'Esposizione cinese è stata la più straordinaria mai realizzata sull'urbanizzazione, e ha lanciato al mondo, Italia compresa, una sfida cruciale: quale modello di città si può immaginare in un prossimo futuro? L'Italia ha colto questa sfida interpretando un Padiglione che sa di "città del futuro", intitolato "La città dell'uomo", in cui l'uomo torna ad essere protagonista, dove il concetto di vivibilità assume un ruolo predominante. Un edificio che ha utilizzato nuovi materiali eco-compatibili, rispettosi dell'ambiente, proiettati verso il futuro. Del resto, il tema stesso dell'Expo lanciava questa sfida. Un Padiglione che è subito assurto a simbolo del saper fare italiano rinnovando così nell'immaginario dei visitatori la tradizione dell'architettura espressa dall'Italia. Ed è stata sicuramente l'architettura una delle chiavi di lettura privilegiate dove ricercare nuovi germogli di fiducia del futuro. Un futuro in grado di immaginare le nuove comunità, le better cities e la sua better life in rapporto con il territorio e con il mondo. Per questo abbiamo voluto dedicare un intero mese della partecipazione italiana all'Expo di Shanghai proprio all'architettura. Nel mese di settembre, architetti e studiosi internazionali si sono confrontati sulle sfide dell'eco-compatibilità e dell'eco-sostenibilità. Nello stesso mese abbiamo ospitato la mostra "L'Architettura italiana per la Città cinese": un esempio concreto di quanto l'Italia possa dire e fare per spostare più in là l'orizzonte di un futuro in cui la ricerca di nuovi materiali ecosostenibili all'architettura, gioca un ruolo decisivo. Se qualcosa rimarrà di questa Expo dei record sarà anche l'immenso capitale umano e conoscitivo, che ha avuto modo di confrontarsi nel Padiglione italiano su temi attuali e urgenti, quali quelli ispirati dal tema generale dell'Expo, "Better city, Better life". Il successo della nostra partecipazione sarà ancora più importante se anche grazie alle nostre proposte, l'idea di una città e di una vita migliore sarà più chiara e realizzabile. Credo che in nessun luogo al mondo oggi più che in Cina ci si stia ponendo il problema della necessità di progettare delle città armoniche. Città ideali studiate fin dal principio per l'uomo. Città che non smettono mai di sorprendere, mescolando da sempre con equilibrio economia, capolavori architettonici, benessere, gusto, rispetto ambientale. Una città 'tipo' che l'Italia, più di altri, è in grado di proporre con forza, perché è proprio il nostro Paese e il nostro passato il punto da cui cominciare a guardare per trovare ispirazione. La nostra architettura è in grado di fornire le risposte giuste e ringrazio per questo gli architetti Franco Purini e Uberto Siola, curatori della mostra sull'architettura italiana per la città cinese che è stata l'occasione per condividere idee e progetti con i nostri amici cinesi e far capire loro che quello cui mirano - una città più armonica è la nostra città.

The great nineteenth-century English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson received an unusually thorough education in the classical languages, and he remained an active classical scholar throughout his lifetime. His intimate knowledge of both Greek and Latin literature left an indelible stamp on his poetry, both in terms of the sound and rhythm of his verses and in the themes that inspired him. Stateliest Measures, the first full-length study of Tennyson's thematic and metrical uses of classical material, examines the profoundly important role that his classical background played as he fashioned himself into a poet in the 1820s and 30s, and as he defined himself as poet laureate as of 1850. A.A. Markley examines Tennyson's objectives in developing the classical dramatic monologue, which, together with In Memoriam and his experiments with classical meters, indicate the degree to which he patterned himself after the Roman poet Virgil in attempting to provide modern Britain with a literature worthy of a new and rapidly expanding world empire. Stateliest Measures demonstrates that Tennyson's engagement with the long-running and complex nineteenth-century debates concerning Hellenism, Imperialism, and modern British culture was much more profound than his critics have recognized.

La rivista è organizzata in tre sezioni: la prima contiene saggi e articoli; la seconda presenta discussioni e analisi d’opera relative alle scienze linguistiche e letterarie; la terza sezione ospita recensioni e una rassegna di brevi schede bibliografiche riguardanti la linguistica generale e le linguistiche delle singole lingue (francese, inglese, russo, tedesco). La rivista pubblica regolarmente articoli in francese, inglese, italiano e tedesco, e occasionalmente anche in altre lingue: nel 2010, ad esempio, ha pubblicato un volume tematico interamente in russo.

Philosophy, social ontology, cultural anthropology, aesthetics, digital hermeneutics, media theory, cognitive science: these are just some of the disciplines that contribute to the philosophy of the city. This variety of approaches doesn't necessarily result in a chaotic mix. Many of the included forms of discourse belong to the same episteme, which means there are many connections and overlaps. This is true both in the literatures of reference and in the ways of answering the question of what 'the city' is. Secondly, the texts don't focus on the city itself, but on those who live in, design, imagine and think about it. Thirdly, because these texts create a place where different ideas can live together. Overall, almost 210 participants registered to the conference, confirming that the community is eager to meet in person and to enjoy both the scientific and social events together with the colleagues.
