In the 19th and 20th centuries, dozens of anarchist publications appeared throughout the United States despite limited financial resources, a pestering and censorial postal department, and persistent harassment, arrest, and imprisonment by the State. Such works energetically advocated a stateless society built upon individual liberty and voluntary cooperation. In Anarchist Periodicals in English Published in the United States (1833-1955): An Annotated Guide, Ernesto A. Longa provides a glimpse into the doctrines of these publications. This volume highlights the articles, reports, manifestos, and creative works of anarchists and left libertarians who were dedicated to propagandizing against authoritarianism, sham democracy, wage and sex slavery, and race prejudice. In the survey are nearly 100 newspapers produced throughout North America. For each entry, the following information is provided: title, issues examined, subtitle, editor, publication information, including location and frequency of publication, contributors, features and subjects, preceding and succeeding titles and an OCLC number to facilitate the identification of owning libraries via a WorldCat search. Excerpts from a selection of articles are provided to convey both the ideological orientation and rhetorical style of each paper's editors and contributors. Finally, special attention is given to highlighting the scope of anarchist involvement in combating obscenity and labor laws that abridged the right to freely circulate reform papers through the mails, speak on street corners, and assemble in union halls.
Unless new discoveries are made in the prevention or treatment of stroke, Alzheimer's Disease and depression, the number of patients with these diseases is sure to increase dramatically by the year 2050. Thus, developing strategies to retard or delay the onset of stroke, AD and depression these neurological disorders is of critical important. The present monograph will provide current and comprehensive information on the relationship between neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in age-related neurological disorders at the molecular level. The information described in this monograph on lifestyle (diet and exercise), genes and age is intended to facilitate and promote new discoveries for the treatment of age-related neurological disorders.
The fields of hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) continue to attract the attention of researchers in the various disciplines connected to these fascinating problems that represent two of the key outstanding chemical challenges for the petroleum refining industry in view of their very strong environmental and commercial implications. One area that has flourished impressively over the last 15 years is the organometallic chemistry of thiophenes and other related sulfur-containing molecules. This has become a powerful method for modeling numerous surface species and reactions implicated in HDS schemes, and nowadays it represents an attractive complement to the standard procedures of surface chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis, for understanding the complex reaction mechanisms involved in this process. Similar developments have begun to appear in connection with HDN mechanisms, although in a much more modest scale and depth. Some years ago when, encouraged by Prof. B. R. James, this book was planned, several excellent reviews and monographs treating different aspects of HDS were already available including some on the subject of organometallic models. However, it seemed appropriate to try to summarize the most striking features of this chemistry in an updated and systematic way, and inasmuch as possible in connection with the common knowledge and beliefs of the mechanisms of heterogeneous HDS catalysis. Hopefully, this attempt to build some conceptual bridges between these two traditionally separated areas of chemistry has met with some success.
Recently, psychologists and neurobiologists have conducted experiments taken to show that human beings do not have free will. Many, including a number of philosophers, assume that, even if science has not decided the free will question yet, it is just a matter of time. In The Experimental Approach to Free Will, Katherin A. Rogers accomplishes several tasks. First, canvasing the literature critical of these recent experiments (or of conclusions drawn from them) and adding new criticisms of her own, she shows why these experiments should not undermine belief in human freedom – even robust, libertarian freedom. Indeed, many of the experiments do not even connect with any philosophical understanding of free will. Through this discussion, she generates a long list of problems – ethical as well as practical – facing the attempt to study free will experimentally. With these problems highlighted, she shows that even in the distant future, supposing the brain sciences to have advanced far beyond where they are today, it will likely be impossible to settle the question of free will experimentally. She concludes that, since philosophy has not, and science cannot, settle the question of free will, it is more reasonable to suppose that humans do indeed have freedom. Brings together, and adds to, criticisms of recent experiments (or conclusions drawn from them) which supposedly show that human beings do not have free will Analyzes recent experiments supposedly related to human freedom through the lens of a philosophically informed portrait of a robust, libertarian free choice Develops a long list of problems – both practical and ethical – facing the experimental study of human freedom Proposes a thought experiment set in a distant future of advanced brain science to show that it is likely impossible for science ever to settle the question of free will.
Provides a social history of how the CIA used the psychedelic drug LSD as a tool of espionage during the early 1950s and tested it on U.S. citizens before it spread into popular culture, in particular the counterculture as represented by Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsberg, Ken Kesey, and others who helped spawn political and social upheaval.

This is a deep and well-thought out framework for studying U.S. foreign policy. Its focus on institutions and decision-making sets it apart from other texts, and its ability to help students think systematically and empirically is a major plus" —Matthew Zierler, Michigan State University What are the factors that shape and determine the foreign policy choices of the United States? The Politics of United States Foreign Policy helps students consider the players, processes, and politics that drive U.S. decisions and involvement in foreign policy. James Scott and Jerel Rosati emphasize that society, government, and global forces have a role to play in the struggle over competing values when it comes to foreign policymaking. The book discusses historical patterns, the president’s ability to influence both at home and abroad, and the tension between democracy and national security. Now at CQ Press, the Seventh Edition has been updated to cover developments since the end of the Obama administration, the transition to the Trump administration, the challenges of changing international and domestic contexts, and the increasingly partisan political environment. The authors provide a comprehensive text that blends substance, theory, and stimulating analysis.
Discover what makes American democracy unique and how its government impacts your life American Democracy in Context provides a combined comparative and historical approach to inspire students to better understand American government and become active citizens. Bestselling authors Maltese, Pika, and Shively explain the distinctive features of how Americans practice democracy—how they vote, translate election results into representation of interests, make policy decisions, enforce laws and maintain justice—and how those practices differ from other democracies throughout the world. The emphasis is always on the American political system, but the search for understanding encourages students to examine how the American system has developed over time (historical context) and how it compares with similar practices in other democracies (comparative context). This combined approach motivates students to understand why politics is relevant to their everyday lives and how they can affect changes and make a difference. This philosophical treatise on the foundations of semantics is a systematic effort to clarify, deepen and defend the classical doctrine that words are conventional signs of mental states, principally thoughts and ideas, and that meaning consists in their expression. This expression theory of meaning is developed by carrying out the Gricean programme, explaining what it is for words to have meaning in terms of speaker meaning, and what it is for a speaker to mean something in terms of intention. But Grice's own formulations are rejected and alternatives developed. The foundations of the expression theory are explored at length, and the author develops the theory of thought as a fundamental cognitive phenomenon distinct from belief and desire, argues for the thesis that thoughts have parts, and identifies ideas or concepts with parts of thoughts. This book will appeal to students and professionals interested in the philosophy of language.

The rationale of the order of Psalms is a puzzle at least as old as Augustine in the fourth century, and Grant (Biblical studies, Highland Theological College, Scotland) does not aspire to solve the whole thing here and now. Rather he bites off only one aspect, a particular paradigm that may have influenced the shape of the Psalms in certain ways.

The book is mainly a crime story with a heartwarming love theme built in to the context. The crime is the illegal sale and distribution of drugs through the equine sports of horse racing and show jumping and how the sports became infiltrated by shady owners and people working within the two sportsfor instance, race horse trainers and jockeys. The novel takes you on a journey at breakneck speed on how the drugs come into the country and are then dispersed through a network of outlets on the racecourses all over the south of England. Furthermore, the novel tackles how the drugs are passed to customers in such a unique manner without money actually changing hands. The novel tells the story of the jockey clubs security agents, Discreet Intelligence Reports & Technical Services (DIRTS), an independent company that deals with all the jockey club security problems, with the jockey club running horse racing in Great Britain. Steve Hurst is the main character in the novel, and DIRTS is his company. The two sports are being swamped with the illegal sale and distribution of cocaine and heroin. Steve loses his fiance, Jane Coe, an international show jumper, to the influences of drugs as she falls for a fellow show jumping junky, Chris Cobb. Steve falls into the arms of one of his employees, Laura, and the love story quickly gathers pace. But who wants to kill Laura and Steve, what do they know, and can Chief Inspector Heyes of the Sussex Police Constabulary save them in time before the contract killer strikes? Initial Review of Vengeance; Readers Digest Magazine. VENGEANCE which is supurbly crafted, intricately detailed story is by turns joyful, sorrowful, and uplifting. A must-read story of relationships, prejudice, and a vivad paean for justice. Overall this fine book offers well-drawn, human characters and logically flowing action.. all written in a striking style If you enjoyed Vengeance, the sequel, The Secret Syndicate, is under way! Its set in Sussex and filled with more intrigue regarding the horse-racing industry. (Release date: September 2015.) Find out how Steve and Laura, Ricky and Charlie, and DCI John Heyes crack their second case. Will Miles and Natalie get together? And how will Laura deal with a yard full of horses? Ronald Moore had the incredible experience of working as an assistant trainer in a racing yard during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He has also held a jockeys licence during that time and rode in races. His niece was an international showjumper who represented her country many times before turning to race riding; she rode in two Grand Nationals. Ronald has always been interested in horse racing and showjumping, and has owned many racehorses and showjumpers over the years. One of his favourite authors is Dick Francis, who wrote many novels based on the horse-racing theme. Jilly Cooper, famed for her book Riders, set in the promiscuous showjumping world, is another author he admires. Vengeance is Ronalds first novel, and he sought to blend racing and showjumping as the storys backdrop, peppering the action with romance, as well as various criminal activities regarding the illegal sale and distribution of drugs. This provides a unique spin on this tried-and-trusted equestrian theme that has served countless authors so well in the past. Ronald intends to utilise the main characters in this novel in the sequel which he is writing at the moment. He hopes the poignant scenes and moral issues threaded through the story, together with the romance and fast-paced action, will make Vengeance a memorable and enjoyable read.

For all of its magnificence, this irreplaceable work has a major shortcoming--it lacks an every-name index. Now, thanks to the prodigious efforts of Patricia A. Fogle, Clearfield Company is proud to announce the publication of a complete name index to Williams and McKinsey's "History of Frederick County, Maryland." Like the work it is based upon, the index is divided into two parts. The index to Volume I (the historical narrative) takes up the first third of Mrs. Fogle's effort, while the remaining two thirds cover the genealogical sketches in Volume II. All told, the researcher will find more than 40,000 individuals named in this index. All individuals or libraries who currently own the "History of Frederick County, Maryland" will want to purchase Mrs. Fogle's finding aid as an invaluable companion to the original volumes. Those researching Frederick County who do not own the History but can gain access to the base volumes will also want to keep Mrs. Fogle's Index on hand, since it unlocks an enormous number of links to the county's past.

Ultrasound is the backbone of modern obstetric and gynecology practice. Recent technological breakthroughs in diagnostic ultrasound, including the advent of color Doppler, power Doppler, three-dimensional and four dimensional imaging, have led ultrasound to surpass the expectations of Ian Donald, its visionary father. The text is divided into three parts general aspects, obstetrics, and gynecology. The first and second textbooks were successful in this endeavor, but with the explosion of knowledge, it was clear that an expanded and updated third edition would be invaluable. Section one deals with a variety of topics that lay the foundation for the rest of the book. Section two addresses the myriad subtopics in obstetric ultrasound that optimize the care of pregnant women and fetal patients. The last section addresses the essential role that ultrasound plays in the many dimensions of clinical gynecology.
