A Polynomial Approach to Linear Algebra is a text which is heavily biased towards functional methods. The kaleidoscope, the stereoscope, and other nineteenth-century optical toys analyzed as “new media” of their era, provoking anxieties similar to our own about children and screens. In the nineteenth century, the kaleidoscope, the thaumatrope, the zoetrope, the stereoscope, and other optical toys were standard accessories of a middle-class childhood, used both at home and at school. In Playful Visions, Meredith Bak argues that the optical toys of the nineteenth century were the “new media” of their era, teaching children to be discerning consumers of media—and also provoking anxieties similar to contemporary worries about children's screen time. Bak shows that optical toys—which produced visual effects ranging from a moving image to the illusion of depth—established and reinforced a new understanding of vision as an interpretive process. At the same time, the expansion of the middle class as well as education and labor reforms contributed to a new notion of childhood as a time of innocence and play. Modern media culture and the emergence of modern Western childhood are thus deeply interconnected. Drawing on extensive archival research, Bak discusses, among other things, the circulation of optical toys, and the wide visibility gained by their appearance as printed templates and textual descriptions in periodicals; expanding conceptions of literacy, which came to include visual acuity; and how optical play allowed children to exercise a sense of visual mastery. This book presents a development of the frequency-domain approach to the stability study of stationary sets of systems with discontinuous nonlinearities. The treatment is based on the theory of differential inclusions and the second Lyapunov method. Various versions of the Kalman-Yakubovich lemma on solvability of matrix inequalities are presented and discussed in detail. It is shown how the tools developed can be applied to stability investigations of relay control systems, gyroscopic systems, mechanical systems with a Coulomb friction, nonlinear electrical circuits, cellular neural networks, phase-locked loops, and synchronous machines.
CMOS technology has now reached a state of evolution, in terms of both frequency and noise, where it is becoming a serious contender for radio frequency (RF) applications in the GHz range. Cutoff frequencies of about 50 GHz have been reported for 0.18 æm CMOS technology, and are expected to reach about 100 GHz when the feature size shrinks to 100 nm within a few years. This translates into CMOS circuit operating frequencies well into the GHz range, which covers the frequency range of many of today's popular wireless products, such as cell phones, GPS (Global Positioning System) and Bluetooth. Of course, the great interest in RF CMOS comes from the obvious advantages of CMOS technology in terms of production cost, high-level integration, and the ability to combine digital, analog and RF circuits on the same chip. This book discusses many of the challenges facing the CMOS RF circuit designer in terms of device modeling and characterization, which are crucial issues in circuit simulation and design.
Rhythm was the first expression of cardiac activity which fell under man's obser vation, and the heart beat has always represented the very essence of life itself as it accelerates or slows during moments of rest, effort, joy and pain until it comes to a halt at the moment of death. Undoubtedly the heart beat was, for a considerable time, the only semiological element by which man could interpret the dysfunctions of the organism. Even after thousands of years, research into the alterations of cardiac rhythm still holds a certain fascination, although modern methods and sophisticated devices have changed the approach to such studies. Only about ten years ago, the in terpretation of arrhythmias was obtained by a standard electrocardiogram to which experimental findings on animals were still arbitrarily applied. On the other hand, the achievement of diagnostic decisions was of little importance outside the sphere of pure intellectual speculation since valid therapeutical treatments were lacking. At present, by means of electrophysiological investigations, one can verify and check 'in situ' the different forms and mechanisms through which rhythm and conduction disorders are manifested. Thus, achieving such a methodology which may be defined as a 'functional biopsy', we are allowed to put forward more accurate therapeutic indications now available using both pharmacological and electrical treatment.
Native to the Kalahari Desert, Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant known by generations of Indigenous San peoples to have a variety of uses: to reduce hunger, increase energy, and ease breastfeeding. In the global North, it is known as a natural appetite suppressant, a former star of the booming diet industry. In Reinventing Hoodia, Laura Foster explores how the plant was reinvented through patent ownership, pharmaceutical research, the self-determination efforts of Indigenous San peoples, contractual benefit sharing, commercial development as an herbal supplement, and bioprospecting legislation. Using a feminist decolonial technoscience approach, Foster argues that although patent law is inherently racialized, gendered, and Western, it offered opportunities for Indigenous San peoples, South African scientists, and Hoodia growers to make unequal claims for belonging within the shifting politics of South Africa. This radical interdisciplinary and intersectional account of the multiple materialities of Hoodia illuminates the co-constituted connections between law, science, and the marketplace, while demonstrating how these domains value certain forms of knowledge and matter differently.
