From five authors with over two decades of experience teaching origins together in the classroom, this is the first textbook to offer a full-fledged discussion of the scientific narrative of origins from the Big Bang through humankind, from biblical and theological perspectives. This work gives the reader a detailed picture of mainstream scientific theories of origins along with how they fit into the story of God's creative and redemptive action.

This book had its nucleus in some lectures given by one ofus (J. O'M. B. ) in a course on electrochemistry to students of energy conversion at the Vniversity of Pennsylvania. It was there that he met a number of people trained in chemistry, physics, biology, metallurgy, and materials science, all ofwhom wanted to know something about electrochemistry. The concept of writing a book about electrochemistry wh ich could be understood by people with very varied backgrounds was thereby engendered. The lectures were recorded and written up by Dr. Klaus Muller as a 293-page manuscript. At a later stage, A. K. N. R. joined the effort; it was decided to make a fresh start and to write a much more comprehensive text. Of methods for direct energy conversion, the electrochemical one is the most advanced and seems the most likely to become of considerable practical importanee. Thus, conversion to electrochemically powered trans portation systems appears to be an important step by means of which the difficulties of air pollution and the effeets of an increasing concentration in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide may be met. Corrosion is recognized as having an electroehemical basis. The synthesis of nylon now contains an important electroehemical stage. Some central biological mechanisms have been shown to take place by means of electrochemical reactions. A number of Ameriean organizations have recently recommended greatly increased activity in training and research in electrochemistry at universities in the Vnited States.

The interaction of neurotransmitters, neuromodulators and neuroactive drugs with receptors localized at the cell surface initiates a chain of molecular events leading to integrated neuronal responses to the triggering stimuli. Major advancements in the characterization and isolation of recep tor molecules have answered many quest ions regarding the nature of the ele ments that determine the specificity in these interactions. At the same time, recent studies have provided evidence that delicate regulation by intracellular enzymatic systems determines the efficiency of the stimulus response coupling process, mediates the interaction between receptors, operates in feedback control mechanisms and transduces signals from the receptors to various effector sites in a highly coordinated fashion. These studies are at the focus of the present volume, which is an outcome of a symposium held at the University of Vermont College of Medicine on March 21-23, 1986, in conjunction with the seventeenth annual meeting of the Amer ican Society for Neurochemistry. The symposium has demonstrated clearly that the concerted efforts of investigators in neurophysiology, biochemis try, pharmacology, cell-biology, molecular genetics, neurology, and psy chiatry are required to achieve better understanding of the processes under lying neuronal responsiveness. This volume includes contributions provided by prominent investigators in all these research areas. We hope that the readers will find here a useful source of information and ideas for stimu lating further studies which may serve to narrow the gap between basic neuroscience research and its clinical implications.
Perspectives in Membrane Biology is consists of the proceeding of the first Meeting on Perspectives in Membrane Biology held at Oaxaca, Mexico, on January 14-18, 1974. Organized into seven parts, the book first discusses the structure and plasticity of biological membranes. It then explains the ion and metabolite distribution, as well as the conservation of energy and light mediated phenomena in membranes. It also elucidates the role of membranes in genome expression, the association between membrane and immunological response, and the reconstitution of specific membrane functions.

The Mellin transformation is widely used in various problems of pure and applied mathematics, in particular, in the theory of differential and integral equations and the theory of Dirichlet series. It is found in extensive applications in mathematical physics, number theory, mathematical statistics, theory of asymptotic expansions, and especially, in the theory of special functions and integral transformations. It is essentially used in algorithms of integration in computer algebra systems. Since the majority of integrals encountered in applications can be reduced to the form of the corresponding Mellin transforms with specific parameters, this handbook can also be used for definite and indefinite integrals. By changes in variables, the Mellin transform can be turned into the Fourier and Laplace transforms. The appendices contain formulas of connection with other integral transformations, and an algorithm for determining regions of convergence of integrals. The Handbook of Mellin Transforms will be of interest and useful to all researchers and engineers who use mathematical methods. It will become the main source of formulas of Mellin transforms, as well as indefinite and definite integrals.
Breastfeeding and child feeding at the center of nurturing practices, yet the work of nurture has escaped the scrutiny of medical and social scientists. Anthropology offers a powerful biocultural approach that examines how custom and culture interact to support nurturing practices. Our framework shows how the unique constitutions of mothers and infants regulate each other. The Dance of Nurture integrates ethnography, biology and the political economy of infant feeding into a holistic framework guided by the metaphor of dance. It includes a critique of efforts to improve infant feeding practices globally by UN agencies and advocacy groups concerned with solving global nutrition and health problems.
Volume 1 of 3. Originally published in 1849, this work gives details of “the life and services of every living officer in ‘Her Majesty's Navy” who was serving or had retired by 1845 – nearly 5,000 officers in all. Generally acknowledged as the most comprehensive work of its kind, it was a considerable undertaking for one man to piece together such detailed biographies. This information was compiled from official records and from details supplied by the officers themselves. The service details found on every page reflect the centuries-old naval traditions of devotion to duty and great bravery in the face of danger. They also provide information on the many naval actions that were fought at the end of the eighteenth and first half of nineteenth centuries. Coincidentally, the original publication took place during the year of issue of what is now referred to as the Naval General Service Medal. In 1847 Queen Victoria authorised this award to be struck to record the services of naval officers and men who took part in various actions between 1793 and 1815, later extended to 1840. The award was limited to those who were alive at the time of the announcement. Over 200 Naval actions were commemorated on clasps to this medal; details of these and a considerable number of other engagements are to be found throughout this volume. Over the century and a half since its publication, this work has established itself as an essential reference work for naval historians and for a wider section of the public who are in search of their naval ancestry.
From World War II to high above the Earth to Vietnam, this memoir tells the story of fighter pilot Howard C. "Scrappy" Johnson. Beginning with his early years in Knoxville, Tennessee, the book follows Johnson through his career at the University of Louisville and his enlistment as an Air Force cadet at the onset of World War II. After World War II, Johnson served a tour of duty in the skies over Korea and in 1958 broke the world's altitude record by over 14,000 feet, soaring at 91,249 feet in his F-104A Starfighter. For this remarkable feat he was awarded the Collier Trophy, aviation's highest honor. In Vietnam, he was director of operations for the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing and was instrumental in founding the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots, a group dedicated to the remembrance of fallen and captured airmen. Written with panache, this work records the bigger-than-life adventures of one of America's finest.
This book provides a compact, but thorough, introduction to the subject of Real Analysis. It is intended for a senior undergraduate and for a beginning graduate one-semester course.
